14 Reasons Your Shirt is Cock Blocking You

Pleased and smiling guy with hands on his chest looking at camera, wearing glasses and printed t-shirt, standing over pink background, positive emotions

Don’t let your shirt be the reason you’re not getting girls RIGHT NOW. You’ve got enough to worry about asking a girl for her number, going for the kiss, or trying to seal the deal. Whether you’re on a date, going to the grocery store, or going out on the weekend, make your shirt selection one less thing you have to worry about. Below are 14 things to avoid when picking out a shirt for any of setting:

1. Too Big

Before ANYTHING else, FIT is the most important aspect of fashion. You’re shirt could be a $500 Armani button-down, but you’ll look like a chump if there are flaps of fabric hanging around your waist. Do yourself a favor and ask a salesperson for advice on sizing.

2. Too Small

We get it, you have muscles. The only thing a too-tight shirt conveys is that you’re trying too hard. One easy way to tell if your shirt is too small is if the fabric under your armpits is pulled tight across your skin without raising your arms.

3. Wrong Color

You don’t need to be a fashion expert to find a shirt in a good color. If you have light skin, stay away from muted colors. If you have dark skin, lean towards subdued and pastel colors. For more detailed advice on color and complexion, check out the Complexion & Clothing Color Decoder.

4. Graphics

Unless you’re doing yard work or getting sweaty at the gym, leave your Rage Against the Machine t-shirt at home. Women want to see style when they look at you—not which bands you worshipped in high school.

5. Wrong Setting

A first date is NOT the right setting for an old, raggedy t-shirt you’ve had since college. With a few exceptions, your shirt selection for a first date should ALWAYS be a button-down. You’re aiming to IMPRESS and ATTRACT her with everything you do. Don’t sell yourself short.

6. Wrinkly

Do yourself a favor and go to Macy’s or Nordstrom’s and invest in some “wrinkle-free” button-downs. I love these shirts because they last forever, are relatively inexpensive, and only need five or ten minutes in the dryer to be cured of all wrinkles.

7. Tucking In A T-Shirt

NEVER under ANY circumstances, tuck your t-shirt into your pants. Sitcom stars in the 90s rocked this look. You are not a 90s sitcom star. Don’t tuck in your t-shirt like a 90s sitcom star. Women do not want to date a 90s sitcom star.

8. Tucking Into Jeans

Wearing a pair of jeans inherently means you’re going for a “stylishly casual” look. Tucking in your button-down will only muddy this effect. Though worn by some corporate executives to project a “hip-professional” vibe, tucking your button-down into your jeans only serves to take away from the classiness of the button-down.

9. Stains

Sweat, mud, or mustard, a stained shirt isn’t going to get you laid. This tells her that you’re life is too chaotic to even take care of your clothing—not an attractive trait to display. Go buy a stain-remover pen, or throw the shirt out.

10. Short-Sleeved Button-Downs

Ever notice those horrible shirts that Dwight Schrute wears on The Office? Don’t be like Dwight. The only shirt you should wear with short sleeves is a t-shirt.

11. Popped Collars

There are certain fashion items that are okay to wear with an upturned collar. A leather biker jacket is one of them. Pea coats and trench coats are other options for this look. However, you’re bright blue Ralph Lauren polo should NEVER have a popped collar. Hate to break it to you, but women are not attracted to the “bro” look.

12. Too Busy

Keep it simple. Stay away from paisley in general, and plaids with more than two or three colors. The purpose of a shirt is to ENHANCE your physique and skin-tone—not to steal the show. If you have any “Hawaiian” shirts, get rid of them right now.

13. Too Much “V”

V-necks add and accentuate the attractive and masculine lines on any guy. However, wearing a v-neck that cuts down to your belly button is taking the look too far. The deepest a v-neck should ever reach is roughly an inch above the bottom of your pectoral muscles.

14. Neck

One thing a lot of guys overlook when it comes to button-downs is neck sizing. If you can’t button the top button on your shirt, it’s too tight. If you can fit the width of more than one or two fingers between the collar and your neck, it’s too loose.
